How to install device cals windows server 2008

I'd like to confirm a couple things. I've activated the server with the key that we got. Now, I don't need to do anything else, right? We have the paperwork that says we own 11 device CAL's, but it's pretty much "honor system" that we limit the number of devices connecting to the server to 11, correct? There's nothing on the server that tells it "only 11 devices may connect to me," correct? If that's the case, here are some follow up questions: 1. How do I control which 11 devices may connect?

Is that an Active Directory thing? If you include the administrator account, there are 4 maybe 5 AD users that will need to use Remote Desktop to connect to either the server or another computer on the network. Do we need Terminal Services licenses for this? I will note here that our server is Enterprise Core running Hyper-V with 3 virtual machines.

If I do need TS licenses, do I purchase them through a retailer? And then use the steps you mentioned to activate? What is the point of "installing" if it doesn't keep track of them? Is this "honor system" like the device CAL's? Thanks Tom. Thursday, May 7, PM. TIA Paul. Thursday, November 18, PM. Tuesday, February 1, PM. It is no wonder so many people try to cheat, steal and bootleg their stuff. Wednesday, February 2, PM.

The issue I have is that my users need to map the shared drive on Server R2. The server has initial 5 user CALs. The server will reject the user access after the 5 user CALs are used up. We purchase additional 7 CALs. But could not find a way to expand the number from 5 to Any advice will be appreciated.

Monday, October 24, PM. MS is so retarded sometimes.. The first time a computer or device connects to an RD Session Host, its by default issued a temporary license. They are not assigned to specific users permanently like Device CALs are to devices. The connection method you used during activation, is retained. I chose Enterprise Agreement. These are the steps for Enterprise Agreement 4.

Then click Next to complete the license installation process. When you are done specifying license servers, click OK. Specifying licensing mode and license server for many RDS session host servers manually, can be time consuming. It must be configured in a GPO that is applied to the license server. Remote Desktop Services formerly known as Terminal Services allows multiple concurrent users to access Windows Server in order to provide application and data hosting services using Microsoft 'Presentation Virtualization' technology. While most bit and bit applications run as is on Windows Remote Desktop Services, several others do not perform as expected due to the difference in the platform multi-user environment, concurrent access by multiple users, and so on.

For further information regarding application quality, please read the Application Readiness for Terminal Services white paper. See the Windows 7 Bit Only topic for details. Most applications written for bit will continue to work as normal in WoW mode. Any new applications written for Windows 7 Remote Desktop Services should be developed and tested for deployment on bit platforms. Remote Desktop IP Virtualization allows the user to assign IP addresses to remote desktop connections on a per-session or per-program basis:.

Some programs require a unique IP address for each instance of the application. Prior to Windows Server R2, every session on a remote desktop server shared the same IP address, resulting in compatibility issues for these applications. In Windows Server R2, you can install a program on the Remote Desktop Server just as you would install the program on a local desktop.

Ensure, however, that you install the program for all users and install all components of the program locally on the Remote Desktop Server. For applications that required per-user configurations, such as Microsoft Office Word, an administrator needed to pre-install the application, and application developers needed to test these applications on both the remote desktop client and the Remote Desktop Session Host.
